The best photos from an afternoon of spotting at KDFW yesterday. This Eva Air Cargo 747-45EM (747-400, registration B-16407) is a former passenger airliner converted for cargo. It took off Wednesday from Dallas-Fort Worth bound for Los Angeles and then on to Anchorage, AK.

Indeed. The wind came around from the south overnight, and this same bird flew by our hotel room this morning on the way back from PANC.

The era of the passenger 747 is coming to an end, but still nice to see that a good number of them become BCF freighters.
Like a nicely designed car, this has aged so well.

EVA does brisk business with their air cargo business, so all their combis have been converted to full cargo.
Their PAX planes are primarily A330 and 777s, with the exception of 3 747-400s left.
Edit: from Wikipedia
“As the 777s continue to phase in, the 747s are being progressively retired. On January 5, 2015, EVA Air had retired their first 747 variant, the combi variant. In 2016, EVA announced that the last 747-400 passenger service will be mid-May 2017. Last planned 747-400 long range service will be 26 March 2017. The airline will continue to operate the two daily 747-400 to Shanghai until mid-may. The airline also plans to retire the 747 freighters when the 777 freighters are delivered.”

Good times. I have a friend who is an important person at the Tampa airport. I need to ask her about shooting there, maybe getting access to some non-public areas...

That would be awesome. As an aviation photo buff, I’ve looked at tons of other people’s photos, and it often boils down to location and access.

I just went to drop her a line about it, but it according to the Facebook, she’s out of town for weekend. I’ll bother her when she’s back. I could go to the public areas and shoot, but I’d probably be hassled by security every few minutes. Hell, I got checked out by the D.C. Metro Police/uniformed Secret Service folks a few times when trying to shoot in the Metro. I guess I was taking more pics than the average tourist. It was weird. The just came and stood by me for a while and followed me around the platform. I’m too pretty for federal prison, so I’ll ask before going to the airport.

I have never been hassled at any public viewing area. I even shoot outside Dyess AFB, home of B-1 bombers flying over Syria and Afghanistan, and get friendly waves from local cops and even USAF security. I guess it depends on the cops.
